Quest: Bandit Had It

(Invite them to join you)

You gesture for the stranger to take a seat by the fire. If it’s one thing you’ve learned on your journeys, is that travelers look out for each other! This stranger certainly looked like they had it rough, so it was the very least you could do. The stranger sits down, and you see the hint of a kind smile through their cloaked face.

Stranger: Thank you very much. I thought I was going to be in trouble. Thank Chi’falla I came across your little camp..

You nod your head. More than happy to provide comfort. You offer some snacks to the stranger, who graciously accepts it and eats as if they were starving.

Stranger: Delicious! I haven’t eaten in over a day. I’ve gotten lost you see, I was making my way east until some bandits ambushed me and took everything but the clothes on my back!

The stranger sighs heavily, shaking their head.

Stranger: ‘T’was a long time ago you could travel from point A to B without a worry, but the roads have sure grown dangerous these days. Luckily for me, I’ve been able to survive thanks to my secret sap stash.

The stranger pulls out a waterskin from their tattered cloak, uncapping it and taking a swig.

Stranger: Bandits thought they took everything, but I fooled them. Would you like to try some? Don’t worry it’s not very strong-- just enough to put some pep in your step. Go on, have a swig.

Reluctantly, you take the waterskin and look at it for a moment. The stranger notices and can’t help but chuckle.

Stranger: Heheh, it ain’t poison if that's what yer worried about. If it were, I would be dead by now.

You struggle to find a fault in that logic, and you take a small sip of the sap. The viscous liquid tastes bitter, but has a sweet and spicy flavor to it, almost like a tamed spiced sap. You shudder as your body processes the flavor and you hand the waterskin back to the stranger.

The two of you continue to enjoy each other's company, sharing travel stories and the stew that you had prepared. As the night goes on, however, you begin to feel incredibly tired and almost dizzy. You decide that you were simply tired and reacting to the sap, so you apologize to the stranger, stating that you need to sleep.

Stranger: Oh aye, it is getting late isn’t it. (yawn) If ye don’t mind me staying, I shall be gone by the morning.

You nod your head in a drowsy stupor and you fall asleep before your head rests upon your travel pack. You remember your body feeling heavy and your mind awfully fuzzy. You can’t even remember the last time you slept this soundly.

When you awake, it’s around mid-morning, and you discover that you were using a rock as a pillow instead of your travel pack. In fact, you aren’t even sleeping in the same spot anymore.

You sit up quickly, your head feeling as though you had been kicked by a rattle cow! It becomes very clear that you were robbed in the night. Slowly, you stand and walk to the firepit where a small note is held down by a small rock.

Thank you for everything. Literally. Maybe next time don’t accept a drink from a stranger without asking their name first, idiot. Don’t worry. At least I left you this kind note to remember me by.

All the best,
